Both Intel and AMD are in the same race for five decades. Along with Nvidia, these three shares the total graphics-card making industry for computers. While Intel’s holding the major share than AMD and Nvidia combined, it’s because of serving all levels of computers. Now, though Intel’s considered a top option for users, here’s a latest high-end processor from AMD beating Intel’s equivalent CPU at all levels.
Enter AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3970X
Launched recently, this new member of AMD’s 3rd generation CPU features 32 cores with 64 threads in a TRX4 socket. And has 16MB of L2 cache memory and a 128MB of L3 cache memory. This was priced heavily at $2,000 a piece, and now shows reasons for being such worth. People at Computerbase have tested this latest AMD CPU at various TDPs (Thermal Design Power) ranging from 180W, 140W and to 95W. The CPU is configured to a TDP of 280W, where it delivers super performance at 3.7GHz. Further, it can be cloaked to a maximum of 4.5GHz. A simple point to note here is, setting the CPU to run at lower clock speed means lowering its performance, but can increase its efficiency accordingly. A comparison between performances of CPU running at 3.77GHz (280W) and 3.37GHz (180W) shows a fair value, as the 10% reduction of clock rate has 100W less consumption, which is great and outpaced Intel’s Core i9-10980XE! The Intel’s flagship processor (Core i9-10980XE), is taking 157W and runs at a speed of 2.3GHz. Further, when set at 140W, Threadripper 3970X is found outperforming the models Threadripper 2990WX (at 250W) and Intel’s Core i9-10980XE (at 165W). And at a single-core test, a 95W Threadripper 3970X is seen at par with Intel’s 95W Core i9-10980XE. Aside these, the core is found performing greatly in ECO mode with constant speeds and higher efficiency. All these experiments resulted in AMD chips beating Intel’s flagship processors at a cheap or equivalent price. After all, AMD has now beaten Intel is not just the cores-count challenge but in efficiency too. AMD, as already doing, is reasonable in grabbing market share from Nvidia and Intel gradually. With processors as Threadripper 3970X, it could soon attain a balanced part of the competition.
